Treaty of Versailles

In 1919, Lloyd George of England, Clemenceau of France, Vittorio Emanuele Orlando of Italy and Woodrow Wilson from the US met to discuss how Germany was to be made to pay for the damage world war one had caused.

The 4 Men that signed the Treaty

Wilson based the 14 point plan on what he believed would keep peace in Europe. Germany, on the other hand found the Treaty of Versailles to be unfair.

The main terms of the Treaty of Versailles were:

  • War Guilt Clause - Germany should accept the blame for starting World War One
  • Disarmament - Germany was only allowed to have a small army and six naval ships. No tanks, no airforce and no submarines were allowed. The Rhineland area was to be de-militarized
  • Territorial Clauses - Land was taken away from Germany and given to other countries. Anschluss (union with Austria) was forbidden.
  • Reparations - Germany had to pay 6,600 million pounds for the damage caused by the war

Germany Wants More

The Treaty of Versailles set the pace for Germany's anger in WWII. Soon Germany realized they needed more Lebensraun. Hitler and Germany signed many treaties they would break, and this was no exception.

On March 7th, 1936 Hitler moved troops into Rhineland, a zone he signed on the treaty of Versailles that would be deemed Demilitarized. Russia and Germany also signed a treaty because Russia knew or Germany's rising power.

Action In Asia

Over East in Asia, Japan is becoming wrestles. In 1931 the Japanese invaded Manchuria. On September 27, 1940, Japan signed the Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy, thus making them part of the "Axis"
On the 7th of December, 1941, Japan attacked America at Peal Harbor in Hawaii. The hit was devastating. This action made America declare war on Japan and its allies, thus dragging America into the war.

Conclusion

Would War 2 was caused by a medley of things whether it be because of Hitler's actions in Germany or Japan trying to gain control over most of Asia. Multiple countries also were weakened because of civil war or political uncertainty.

Questions

1.) What were the names of the leaders from the countries that signed The Treaty of Versailles?
